"Stella's contribution to our baby's health has been nothing short of remarkable. Her excellent performance as a Speech and Language Therapist went beyond our expectations. When we were initially seeking help, we were lost and unsure about how to address our baby's needs. Stella not only provided expert guidance but also gave us a clear direction to follow. Her insights were tailored to our baby's unique situation, which made all the difference.
Stella's advice and strategies were not just theoretical; they were practical and effective. Her dedication to our baby's progress was evident throughout the process. Without her support, we might not have reached the point where our baby is healthy and thriving today. We owe a significant part of our baby's success to Stella.
I can't recommend Stella enough. She's not just a professional SLT; she's a caring, dedicated, and transformative individual who has made an indelible impact on our family's life. If you're looking for a Speech and Language Therapist who goes above and beyond, Stella is the one to choose."
Luke's family experienced a stressful time finding the right supports and advocating for their newborn. They knew something was wrong from the beginning of their baby's life, their gut feeling told them so.
While they received suggestions and supports including a community lactation service and a recommendation to commence topping up with formula to support weight gain, they continued to notice red flags like coughing, choking, spluttering, slow growth, what seemed to be endless feeding episodes and difficulty feeding in a calm relaxed state.
When baby reached 6 weeks, they got in touch and within one session, completed jointly with their LC, they had a supportive, achievable feeding plan and knew what steps to take next.
While their journey has not been easy, I am so proud of their ongoing tenacity and self-advocacy.
"Stella instantaneously changed our feeding journey for Arabella, who would dial up during feeds and have bottle refusal.
Stella was so comforting during sessions. She gave clear and concise information on how to improve our feeds. The feedback via emails and feeding videos was also super helpful. Arabella is a different baby - thank you so much!"
Milk and Honey Paediatrics referred 3 month old Arabella to me for bottle feeding support. Rebecca was spending most of her day feeding Arabella, feeds were taking a long time and blending together. Arabella communicated through her face and body language she was not comfortable during feeds, so we slowed down, observed her communication and made subtle adjustments to increase comfort. A few of the recommendations included gentle desensitisation and positive facial touch, calming before feeds through movement and voice, functional sucking practice, positional adaptations and short breaks during feeds. While an initial session was enough to make a significant impact, follow up was provided. I am so pleased to see Arabella is thriving and now loving solids!
"Stella was a huge help when my (then) 12 month old went off solid food after being unwell & only wanted bottles. After implementing some of Stella's suggestions we were able to ease back into familiar solid food & slowly introduce new foods.
Stella talked me through some of the reasons my daughter might be refusing food and also sent me a number of resources with some practical advice and things to try.
I'd recommend getting in touch with Stella if you're experiencing any issues with your child's eating behaviour. Stella has a wealth of knowledge in this area and can really help get things back on track."
I approached Rachael, offering support "mum to mum" after overhearing her concerns with her toddler not returning to solid foods after illness. Rachael was very receptive to my recommendations, and from a 30minute phonecall with email follow up, she has seen a big improvement in her daughter's eating habits. I love that she now has strategies which support lifelong positive relationships with food, reduce stress at mealtimes, and her daughter is trying a wider variety of foods than before her illness! She is becoming a true food explorer. It is amazing what you can achieve when you consistently implement positive, no pressure, respectful strategies in your home. Thank you for trusting me Rachael.
“From the beginning I always wanted to breastfeed my (2nd) baby as I did with my 1st kid ( now 9 year old). For some reason my new born refused to feed from me since birth. We went through lactation midwives, Plunket and few other consultants but nothing seems to work. I did all they said but nothing seems working with her. I had to pump and feed baby through a bottle from the beginning. With another 9 year old at home, pumping and feeding took all my time. Life was so stressful, seems like I was stuck in a cycle. Bottle feeding was also was hard with my baby and at some point she refused the bottle feed too. She got really sick and admitted to the hospital. Then eventually we were referred to SLT by the hospital. Me and my husband thought another person is about to visit and then same thing is going to happen.
This was when Stella Karaman visited us, she is an amazing personality, at a point from no breastfeeding and no weight gain, with Stella’s strategies my baby has become a fully breast only baby.
When it comes to work Stella shows great commitment and she gives her best effort. She is so passionate about her work and has so many strategies which had amazing response from my baby. Stella is a very friendly person. She gave me mental and emotional support through out this journey. If I didn’t have all her support I would have given up breastfeeding for sure. Her positive attitude and constant encouragement kept me going and made me think breastfeeding will be possible with my 2nd kid as I did with my elder daughter.
I am so grateful to her, as I don’t think I would have succeeded my breastfeeding journey if it was not with Stella's help and support, she was not only a consultant but a wonderful and caring friend, I wish her all the best and I am sure there are more mums who are going to benefit from her services. A++++++”
Fathima’s story highlights the importance of early support to potentially change the trajectory for mama and baby. Her determination to breastfeed is what brought her success alongside implementing recommended strategies. Working with baby to understand her subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) cues, to prevent further negative associations and to rehabilitate her relationship at the breast and with bottles. This dyad's journey was not an easy one, plagued with ongoing one-sided breast pain as a result of subtle and transient oral asymmetry. Supporting Fathima included working alongside the LC, breastfeeding medicine specialist as well as consulting experts in their field. Fathima went on to achieve pain-free breastfeeding. The family benefited from early supports and ideas on how to introduce solids in a positive no pressure way, given the severe oral aversion initially experienced with milk feeds. Fathima's baby transitioned beautifully to solids.
